Madam Web
28 Augustus 2024 – Author Leelai from Phoewa
Movie duration: 1 h en 47 minutes – Year released 2024
The trailer of Madam Web was Engaging. It was dangerous, it was exiting, it was passive and active all together. There is a good use of background music (BGM) that makes the trailer much more endearing. The song in the trailer ‘Bury a Friend Epic Version" a collaboration of Billy Eilish with Greek Music, souths the visuals. Is Madam Web epic enough, and will we want to see a sequel to the longest Spider Universe movie? Read more.
Madam Web is a movie of Casandra Web (Dakota Johnson) she is a New York metropolis paramedic who begins to demonstrate signs of clairvoyance – which is a fancy word for psychic abilities. She needs to keep three young women (Celeste O’Conner, Isabela Merced and Sydney Sweeny) save from a deadly adversary Ezekiel (Tahar Rahim) who wants them destroyed.

The movie did not keep up to the expectations seen and felt in the trailer. The acting of Johnson was monotone, and Rahim did not give an ‘adversary’ feeling. The character of Ezekiel was not written enough as a ‘deadly’ adversary to be engaged in his perused to kill the girls. The dialogue delivery by Johnson and Rahim was not impactful. It was like they were reading the script while acting and forgot to make it a hero/villain performance. The voice of Johnsen throughout the movie was very stoic, Rahim’s voice felt like a voice over. The presence of the three young girls felt badly written into the movie. Every scene in this movie was predictable (no pun intended).
For an origin story the backstory of Cassandra Web and the three girls was not shown enough and there was no build up. So many loose parts in the movie or just no good character development. The powers of Cassandra were not shown enough to experience here as a (Sony) Marvel Hero. The web scene started cool, but then slowly looked like a cartoon. They could have done so much more in portraying her as a powerful character.
The backstory of the three girls was minimum. Trying not to give any spoilers, we only got to know that they are on their own. They were missing, afraid of the police and hungry. They are left with Ben (Adam Scott) and stay with the pregnant Mary (Emma Watson), while they trust Cassandra to come back and save them..“Really Cassandra ‘crazy shit is happening’, and you decide to go on a vacation?” The last scene also felt very weird. What was I watching Strangers Things, Marvel or X-men? This movie felt like a combo of all three concepts. The action scenes where not as impactful as in the trailer, a little bit disappointing.

The ending of the movie brought up more questions. It felt like a weird connection we don’t know yet and so an incomplete movie. What happened with the home situations of the girls, do they live with Casandra? Did Ben reach the hospital safely? Did Mary have a child, and do we know the child's name (you see what I did there)? So many loose ends, that are still connected to each other.
The movie released on 15 February 2024 in the theaters and recently made its way in the top 10 popular titles on Netflix. The other cast of the movie includes Mike Epps, Zosia Mamet and Kerry Bishé. The story is written by Karem Sanga. Screenplay by Claire Parker & SJ Clarkson. Directed by SJ Clarkson. Produced by Lorenzo do Bonaventura. Executive Producers: Adam Merims & Claire Parker
If you watch the trailer, you actually see the whole movie without the weird parts or situations that will raise more questions. The movie had ‘epic’ potential, yet it was not epic. Does not take away that it is a good watch, it just doesn’t meet the Marvel super hero expectation. I would want to see a sequel with better writing and where the actors redeem themselves.
