As-salamu alaikum | wa-alaikum salaam
In the Quran there are a few Surah's (chapters) that start with the word 'Qul' which translates into the English word 'Say'. There are 4 significant Quls which are each made of 4 to 6 ayats (verses), making them easy to learn. The Quls are in the following Surah's:
Four Quls in Islam
Surah | Surah of the Quran | Focus on | |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Surah Kafirun | 109th | Disbelievers |
2 | Surah Ikhlas | 112th | Devotion |
3 | Surah Falaq | 113th | Daybreak |
4 | Surah Nas | 114th | Mankind |
In Urdu they are known as the char Quls. The four Quls are made of short ayats and are easy to remember. Surah Falaq and Surah Nas are together known as Al-mu'awwidhatayn 'The Two Protectors'. They are known for protection against black magic and Jins, and are often recited before going to sleep. Surah Ikhlas is a Surah with an affirmation of Allah as Tawheed (only one). Surah Kafirun is to affirm that a muslim will not believe or practice any other religion, and with that also acknowledging non-believers and their right to believe in their religion.
